Calamari made this tutorial and said awhile back we could use it. I hope you make good tiles everyone!
Making tiles looks easy, but it's much harder than it looks. It takes a lot of practice to be a good tiler, but it's worth a try.
Part 1: Getting Started
The size of 1 tile is 16x16 pixels. You may use as much tiles as you want, but don't make it too big or too small.
Size List
Small tree - 2 tiles long, 1 tile wide
Big tree - 3 tiles long, 2 tiles wide
Poster - 1 tile long, 1-2 tiles wide
Bench - 1 tile long, 2 tiles wide
That's enough for this part. Time for part 2.
Part 2: Scratch
The hardest part. Now you need to make an outline, but make sure it's not too round or straight. Another way to do it that is much easier, is to draw something with the curved line tool. After you drew something, you need to make the outline thinner and shape it a little.
Let's move to part 3.
Part 3: Coloring In
The easiest part. If you draw a tree, make sure it has tree colors. You can go on from that. There is nothing else to add.
Now you are ready to go to part 4.
Part 4: Shading
It's time for shading. Shading is the most important because without the shading the tiles would look flat like paper. In other words; Shading gives the 3D effect. The light comes from the upper corner, so the upper part of the tile will be the lightest. Make sure you shade the outline too, and the brightest outline color is the same as the body's darkest color.
Let's move to the final part; Part 5.
Part 5: Details and Season Changes
You may add things, like flowers to trees. On season change, make sure that in the Winter, all buildings are covered in snow and all trees don't have any leaves. In the Spring, all the flowers are blooming, and the buildings aren't covered in snow anymore. In the Summer, all the trees have just green leaves. In the Autumn, all the leaves are falling from the trees, and flowers aren't blooming anymore.
Well, this tutorial is done and you are ready to start tiling!
Thanks, CM! Please write another tutorial!
